Black Sumatra is a rare breed of chicken that I have been working with for several years now. They are a hardy, alert, low maintenance, beautiful breed that excels at free ranging, good at evading predators. The roosters grow long tails that drag the ground. The hens are good layers of medium eggs. They are all black, with a stunning green iridescence - some also have shimming purple iridescence in their feathers. They have a pea comb, so no worries about frostbite on their combs. Mine have done very well in the winters here, with no heat in the coops.
I've decided to thin down my flock a bit and have several hens available that hatched here last year (it's very rare that I let hens go). I also have roosters from last year as well as some youngers from this spring. Finally, I have a batch of chicks hatched 2 months ago. AND a handful of Sumatra crosses that are very interesting. They are all healthy and well-loved, raised on sunshine, grass, and bugs.
